The Euro.Geo Project is supported through the Minerva Action under the Socrates Programme. The project partners are EUROGEO, Liverpool Hope University College, Amsterdam TEacher Training College, University of Bucharest and Nelson Thornes.

Project Aims
The aim is to promote the European Dimension through geographical education. It is concerned with improving the electronic resource base for teaching in and about the countries of Europe..

PROJECT ACTIVITIES
The project members have completed the state of the art analysis of Citizenship and Geography in different European countries. These reports are available on the Web site. The needs of European Geographical Associations, teachers and schools have been surveyed and a list of needs determined.

The project team present the results and outcomes and determine project products as a result of this survey and the consultation with experts and Presidents of Geography Associations. The main needs have been identified as:

  • interactive maps of Europe at a regional scale
  • an online handbook supporting Geography teachers in delivering citizenship through Geography
  • links and information on good quality Web sites which are useful for teaching Geography and European citizenship
  • curriculum materials and lesson plans
  • case study training and workshops to support teachers

PROJECT EVENTS
Project event Funchal: September 2002
Delegates have been invited to attend the Funchal project conference in September 2002, hosted by the APG (Portuguese Geography Teachers Association), where the Euro.Geo Project will be presented and the activities will further develop the products and objectives. The theme is ‘European citizenship and valuing cultural diversity’. A CD ROM of materials will be produced as part of the project.

Final Project Conference
The final event of this project will take place in the beautiful city of Ljubliana in Slovenia, with the theme of GeoInformation. Further details will follow in the next newsletter.
