Teaching about European regions

Teaching about regional dimensions in Europe students realise that issues are usually complex. Students ought to be able to experience problem-solving approaches, evaluation and activities that encourage the development of critical thinking so that students can reach their own opinions.

The European dimension should encourage students in Geography to explore data about Europe, European countries, their natural features, population, economic development, and other issues. Maps and sources of geoinformation should play a major role.

The study of European regions might include :

  • the natural and geographical features of the regions
  • current geographical issues, phenomena and processes, such as the future of Europe, and population
  • the links between regions, such as cross-border connections and transportation
  • the economy of European regions, such as activities, unemployment, regional development and planning

» Case Studies

Two interactive examples of teaching about European Regions are provided here (Flash plugin required).

These case studies include an animated illustration, ideas for teaching (In the classroom), useful Web sites (Examples) and some thoughts about approaches that might be used (Teaching ideas).
